Oscar Wilde once opined that, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” At Chimney Rock, we have come to believe that life and art actually live in perfect balance with each other.
On the north side of our original barrel room resides a massive allegorical frieze of Ganymede, a mortal of legend, kidnapped by Zeus, to become cupbearer to the gods. In the late afternoon, when the sun lights the curves of the figure, in its stark white grandeur, it is easy to see why our Ganymede vineyard was named after the mythical figure.
The inspiration for this frieze came from Groot Constantia, a famous South African winery established in 1685. This inspiring re-creation by California sculptor Michael Casey, urged us to craft a single vineyard Cabernet with equal power, depth and beauty. Art has come to inspire life at Chimney Rock in the form of this vineyard and wine. We raise a glass to art, life and Ganymede!
