At first glance, the vineyard block where our Clone 4 is planted, known as our Kairos vineyard, looks quite ordinary. It is just another group of vines, planted like any other on a flat part of our estate. In viticulture, one learns that you must look a little closer to truly understand a vineyard. Walk towards these vines and look closer, and you will note that the Cabernet clusters that grow here are loose, small and scraggly. The size of the berries, tiny – you might think them to be blueberries they are so small. The vines seem to struggle, and the canopy is not full and dense. The explanation is hidden just a few feet below, where a very shallow hardpan in the soil causes these vines to find perfect balance and behave much like grapevines on a steep hillside. This magnificent vineyard exclaims: “never judge a book by its cover,” you might just miss something extraordinary.
